Hemispheres Movement Balance and Learning: Screening Tests and Movement Programmes
The Hemispheres Movement, Balance and Learning is a programme that is based on sound clinical research and experience. It offers non clinicians some skills to help identify core neuromotor weaknesses that if left undetected can begin to really impact on a child's learning. It looks at neuromotor weaknesses/immaturities such as retention of key primitive reflexes like ATNR and evidence of asymmetry that can lead to immature laterality. Challenges in crucial skills like crossing of the midline, spatial awareness and balance are also addressed.
Whilst these skills impact on physical development they also play a key role in the integration of the brain for thinking and learning. This movement programme offers a real difference because the 6-week movement programme offered following the screening process is different for each age band and developmentally appropriate to each. There are two main age bands covered in the treatment programmes: 4 - 6 years and 7+ years. Each programme is structured and provides inherent consistency, challenge and repetition, the very ingredients needed by the brain to create real changes in how the brain and body communicate with each other.
Hemispheres Movement Balance and Learning: Screening Tests and Movement Programmes
Based on over 20 years of clinical experience and up to date research, this valuable resource has been developed to offer schools a simple but effective screening tool and a 6 week movement programme that schools can be confident will not only make a change to a child's physical skills but also improve the legibility of handwriting and writing speed.
The programme is easy to administer. You can get started straight away and really make a difference to the children in your school.
In school age children, where some aspects of learning are a challenge, it is really important for schools to be able to identify the physical skills that are likely to be impacting on a child's ability to make progress. This programme offers schools the ability to screen early neuromotor weaknesses/immaturities.
Using this early detection assessment tool can identify those children who are at 'risk'. The accompanying movement programme can then be recommended to help proactively address some of the children's needs. For those whose needs are greater, the programme can be used to support learning whilst waiting for specialist occupational therapy support.

Does the programme work?
47 children completed the initial study at Yateley Manor School in Hampshire. The children were assessed pre and post treatment. Controlled groups were used to demonstrate the sensitivity of the tool and the degree of change following treatment. The age appropriate movement programme was completed at home under the guidance of parents on a daily basis for 6 weeks. The programme took approximately 10 -15 minutes to carry out each day. All the children made statistically significant improvements following treatment, greater change was observed in the boys compared to the girls, especially in stability, spatial awareness and posture. Both boys and girls showed statistically significant improvements in balance and handwriting legibility and speed. Studies are ongoing.
